Every week I get to look forward to the latest hit from Ketchapp. And this week has been no different with Spring Ninja establishing itself as one of the most fun new games. It would be easy to discard it as just another game that is easy to pick up without offering any real depth of game play. But when you actually get into the game, it is both brutally difficult and awesomely satisfying when you make real progress.

The game play is exceptionally simple because it just involves you pressing and holding your finger to determine the height and length of your pudgy ninja's jumps. if you simply tap, then the ninja will make a little hop without really exerting himself. Hold until the springs are fully compressed and your ninja will fly across the screen with tremendous velocity. And all you need to do is land on a platform, and then another, and another one after that.

I get this question a lot, being "What device should I be playing this on to get the most out of the experience?"

With Spring Ninja, I think the reality is that the screen size doesn't add much to the game play. I prefer to pick up my smartphone and just use a single finger to determine the jumps. And because the game is so light, you're not going to need the latest and greatest hardware from Apple, HTC or Samsung to maximize your experience here.

So, in short, if you've got an iPhone, I think it'll serve you better than an iPad this time around. Save the larger screen for another mobile game.

Without further ado, let's jump right into the tips, tricks and hints for Spring Ninja.

• Factor in the height of the jump

It's common sense in this kind of game to think about the distance of your jump from left to right. And that's half of the equation that you'll definitely want to get down pat if you want to score more than 1 or 2 points. The other half of the equation is the height of your jump. There will be cases when your next platform is of equal height which is by far the easiest situation to conquer. But when you have to jump to a platform that is significantly higher, then you need to compress your springs a lot more than you normally would. Conversely, if you're jumping to a lower platform, it often only takes a tap to land safely.

With one useful hint under your belt, let's get straight to the 2nd trick that will make you instantly more successful.

• Go above and beyond for bonuses

If you're familiar with the saying, "No guts, no glory" then you'll immediately feel how relevant it is to your experience in Spring Ninja. First off, if you don't get over your fear of having to start over frequently over a game over, then you're better off not picking up this game to start. But more importantly, no matter how good you get at the game, how many jumps will you be able to string together without falling into a chasm? Beginners might land 5 jumps, and better gamers might land a dozen jumps before succumbing to the law of averages.

Well, the good news is that you don't need to land 20 jumps to get a score over 20. The secret lies in jumping over the platform that is next in line (essentially skipping over a platform). When you skip over one platform, your jump is worth twice as much. Manage to jump over 2 platforms, and suddenly your landed jump will be worth four times. All that matters at that point is landing the jump.

So you've conquered basic timing of your jumps and now you're skipping platforms for bonus points. What's next?

• Not all levels are created equal

Not all levels are created equal in Spring Ninja, and the sooner you figure that out, the more success you'll have when the stars are aligned your way. I say this after literally playing over 100 levels of Spring Ninja, but there will be times when your first jump is extremely difficult. When that's the case, well, good luck.

But there are also going to be levels where you'll see the first few jumps and they're all laid out on a platter for you: they're equal height and relatively equally spaced apart. So that makes it a prime candidate for a few quick jumps to build your confidence, or a single jump over a couple platforms for an easy 4 points.

When the level is easy to start, take full advantage and use the above tips to maximize your score.

So you're licking your chops when the level starts off with an easy set of jumps. What else can you do to raise your high score?

• It may help to watch the springs

Because I write tips and tricks guides for a living (as well as pursue deals) I have to think about a game on several different levels. And I get really lucky sometimes by finding little tricks that give me an advantage over the average gamer. So with Spring Ninja, here's my quirky hint: watch the springs.

At first, I tried to rely on timing and muscle memory to land most of my jumps, but I got mixed results. Now, after I've decided where I'm going to land my ninja, I set my eyes directly on the springs under his feet and I let my eyes determine when I need to release my finger. Now I basically know how far the ninja will jump when the springs are half-way down or a third of the way down. Give it a try!

So, to summarize, here's what you need to know:

1. Factor in the height of your jump
2. Go above and beyond for bonuses
3. Not all levels are created equal
4. It may help to watch the springs
5. Beware accidental taps or swipes

I admit that I sometimes have an Adrian Monk moment when I can't stop myself from wiping some finger grease from my screen. And so it was when I had finally raised my score over 20 that I couldn't stop myself from wiping the screen which made my ninja hop into the chasm to his death. While some other games have targeted areas for you to tap or press, the entire screen is fair game in Spring Ninja. So pick one finger to do the work, and keep all your other fingers to yourself.
